Colorado Springs Welcomes 24-Hour Mountain Bike National Championships

The USA Cycling 24-Hour Mountain Bike Nationals head to Palmer Park in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this weekend for what should be a new challenge for the riders.
Moab, Utah, the 2010 host, gives the reins in 2011 to Palmer Park, featuring the famous Pikes Peak hovering in the distance at 14,110 feet.
Though the course is located in the center of Colorado Springs, it is remote, with a mix of burst climbs, technical zones, and double-tracks. Add in some rolling singletrack and you get a 13-mile loop with 2,233 feet of climbing.
National championship jerseys will be awarded in the following categories: male solo, duo, open four-person team, junior four-person team, master 35+ four-person team, 45+ four-person team, solo single-speed, female solo, duo, open four-person team, junior four-person team, master 35+ four-person team, 45+ four-person team, solo single-speed, and mixed duo.
Non-national championship categories, known as the Challenge Series, are open to four-person teams under the following: military (members who serve) first responder (members who are police, doctors, etc.) bike shop (members who work at a bike shop) and family (members who are all related).
Josh Tostado of Breckenridge, Colorado, and Jari Kirkland of Crested Butte, Colorado, won the male and female solo titles respectively in last year’s race. The Honey Stinger/Trek duo of Max Taam (Snowmass Village, Colorado) and Sarah Anderson (Glenwood Springs, Colorado) won the mixed duo category.
The race will start at 12 p.m. Saturday, October 1, and end at noon Sunday.
