Stop on a dime, but cost a lot more than that
I’ve spent most of the first half of my mountain bike season riding the premium organic brake pads from Scrub Components. Scrub Components is a small company based in Park City, Utah that specializes in making high-end aftermarket mountain bike brake components. They pride themselves in the fact that their rotors and pads are 100% made in the USA from American parts.
How do they compare?
Scrub Components offers pads for their specific metal composite rotors and replacement pads for most of the top brands with stainless rotors. My setup included the Scrub premium organic pads for the SRAM XX brakes. The pads look the same as the stock pads except for the slot down the middle which is claimed to reduce vibration and noise. The initial setup is pretty straight forward. Simply remove the old pads install the Scrub brand pads and re-adjust the caliper (be sure to thoroughly read the warranty info and follow all installation instructions found at scrubcomponents.com). My initial impression was that these pads are a definite step above the stock Avid pads. This may be due to the unique break in coating on the pads, but out of the box they felt great. However after a couple of rides with some steep extended down hilling the pad did become glazed and the braking was compromised. After some light sanding I was able to bring them back around to performing like new. The durability seems to be on par and I didn’t experience any excess noise.
Are they worth it?
At a MSRP of $28 per wheel, $11 more than the Avid stock replacement pads, the question remains are they worth the nearly 75% more price tag. If you are looking for a quality made in the USA product that performs equally if not slightly better than the stock pads then the answer is yes.
