A lack of sponsors beyond Kenda USA has caused the organizer of one of the stops on USA Cycling’s pro cross-country mountain bike tour to cancel the event.
Andy Bohlmann of Sand Creek Sports Inc. in Colorado Springs announced this week that the Sand Creek International Classic Pro XCT on June 18 is cancelled because, “in the end we could not find the needed sponsorship locally or nationally to fund this race.”
Bohlmann did thank Kenda USA for “stepping up” as a sponsor, but added that a lack of business backers wasn’t “the only reason” for the cancellation. As of Wednesday morning we at Singletrack.com hadn’t heard back from Bohlmann on what the other reasons are, but as soon as we hear we’ll post an update.
Last year the Sand Creek International Classic was an UCI categorized mountain bike stage race held at Cheyenne Mountain Park with a time trial held on Friday, XC on Saturday and short-track on Sunday. For 2011, the event was again scheduled as a stage race, but then in was reduced to a UCI 2, single-day earlier in February to be held at Palmer Park.
Meanwhile, Sand Creek Sports will proceed with its May 15, June 1 and 8, and a June 18 or 19 cross-country race in Colorado Springs.

The Pro XCT gives riders in North America an opportunity to collect UCI points domestically. UCI points ultimately dictate the number of start spots the U.S. will receive for the cross-country race at the 2012 Olympic Games in London as well as improve start order at the annual mountain bike world championships. For 2011, MTB worlds will be held in Champery, Switzerland.
