The Whole Athlete-Specialized Cycling Team recently held its first team training camp of 2011 in Marin County, California.

For the 2011 season the development team’s U23 and junior mountain bikers will focus on USA Cycling’s Pro Cross-Country Tour (Pro XCT) and National Championships, with the additional goal of again qualifying riders to the World Championship Team. In 2010, no fewer than four juniors from Whole Athlete represented the U.S. in Mont Sainte Anne, Canada.

Junior and U23 cross-country mountain bike racers comprise the bulk of the team, with a small contingent of U23 road-focused athletes as well. The team is a non-profit funded program providing young cyclists avenues to the higher levels of the sport, according to Team Director Dario Fredrick.

The athletes range in age from 14-19, including current U.S. national champions Kate Courtney (XC), Keegan Swenson (XC) and Zach Valdez (24-hour).

The team camp was located at the Whole Athlete Performance Center in Marin. Road and mountain bike training rides were held on the  back roads and trails on and around Mt. Tamalpais. Team members also practiced yoga each day. Fredrick guides the squad with the philosophy of “dedication, integrity and fun.”
