For those that have been into mountain biking since the sport’s heady days in the early 1990s, Greg Herbold needs no introduction.

For anyone who’s joined the ranks of us two-wheeled, pedal-powered dirt riders in just the last few years, suffice to say that Herbold (AKA HB) was one of the founding fathers of modern mountain biking. His colorful personality and ripping downhill ability lit up the off-road scene in a way that few riders have repeated since. HB has remained one of the more public and recognizable characters in the bike industry ever since.
Early in his career as a downhill racer, Herbold worked closely with sponsors to develop and improve products. While he outwardly cultivated a wild persona, HB was always savvy in maintaining relationships with his sponsors. A longtime Grip Shift rider (one of the SRAM Corporation’s first products), Herbold now works for SRAM in a marketing and technical education role.
Wandering the dusty paths of the Outdoor Demo, we stumbled across his old Miyata race bike from the early to mid-1990s. Back then it represented one of the most technologically advanced machines that money could buy. Now it looks antiquated, but that didn’t stop us from basking in a warm glow of nostalgia. Enjoy the spin down memory lane.
