It was a tough day for North American men racing at the first World Cup event in the U.S. in five years.

Americans looking to do well on home soil were foiled instead by home rocks — Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (Subaru-Trek), Todd Wells (Specialized Factory Racing) and Adam Craig (Rabobank-Giant) each flatted at some point in the race. And Canadian Geoff Kabush (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) DNF’d after a tearing off his rear mech.

Meanwhile, even the world’s best weren’t immune to flats, as Julien Absalon (Orbea) and Burry Stander (Specialized Factory Racing) were slowed by tire issues.

Jaroslav Kulhavy (Rubena-Birell-Specialized Cycling) continued his steady showing throughout the 2010 season, but on Saturday he was better than consistent as he topped the field for his first victory of the season. Nino Schurter (Scott-Swisspower) fishined second thereby sewing up the 2010 World Cup series title. Third on the day was Schurter’s teammate Florian Vogel.

As for North American men, Sam Schultz (Subaru-Trek) had the best showing. He finished 22nd, 6 mins 47 secs off the lead. Wells was next best American at in 24th place. Horgan-Kobelski finsished the day 42nd, with Michael Broderick (Kenda-Seven) rolling in five spots later.

Carl Decker (Giant Factory Team) and Spencer Paxson (Team S&M Young Guns) finished in the 53 and 54 spots respectively. Troy Wells (ClifBar) came in 58th place.

Other homegrown talent included Stephen Ettinger U23 (67th); Michael McCalla (72nd); Bryan Alders (75th); Mitch Hoke U23 (76th); Jack Hinkens U23 (77th); Pete Ostroski U23 (78th); Thomas Sampson U23 (79th); Kerry Werner U23 (83rd); Russell Finsterwald U23 (84th); Seamus Powell U23 (85th); Ethan Gilmore U23 (87th); Robbie Squire U23 (91st).
